where I teach

Royal Roads University (RRU) is a “special designation university” according to the province. It is located in Victoria, BC. Its mandate is to provide degree programs for working professionals. We have a demographically diverse campus. The average age is 40 for our learners. The on-campus programs skew younger however.

Early in ‘08 I accepted the position of program head for the Bachelors of Arts in Professional Communication in the School of Communication and Culture (SCC). The program has 2 components,

an on-campus 1 year completion degree program,

and

a 2 year blended model completion degree program.

The notion of a completion degree is unique to Canada I think. There are many colleges here that offer 2 year degrees. What we offer is a way for graduates of two year programs to carry on to get their BA degrees. Blended model instruction means combined F2F and online instruction. It is our guiding principle that people who know each other can perform more effectively together online. So we combine intensive 3 week residencies with distance instruction. Our distance instruction is largely team and activities based. We are not a correspondence school. We emphasize collaboration and engagement.

Our program is cohort based like many business schools. All RRU programs are cohort based. At any given moment I am responsible for 2 blended model cohorts, 1 first year, and 1 second year, and 1 on-campus cohort. Cohorts can range in number from 25 to 40 students.

I am assisted by a determined and effective program associate.

If you have any questions about our programs, please write me.

If you are interested in teaching for us whether online or F2F, please write me. I am always interested in cultivating new associate faculty. You should hold at least a masters and you should have a professional profile. Please understand: I am responsible to our students. I need a reason to put you in front of a classroom. I need to be able to argue for your place and position among us. So when you write, please argue likewise whether on grounds of your academic accomplishments or your professional achievement, or whether on some other grounds—e.g. your biography.
